A 7-day trip to visit the sights of mainland Yemen.

We’ll visit dramatic canyons, traverse harsh desert and stop at Shibam, known as the Manhattan of Arabia, with its imposing mud-built buildings. We’ll meet fishing communities along the coasts and the honey makers of the remote Wadi Dawan.

The trip starts in Seiyun, Yemen and we travel through a variety of landscapes, before finishing in Salalah, Oman. An opportunity to experience cultures, which are rarely seen by many foreigners.

You will be guided by experienced local guides and an international guide on the adventure.

Yemen mainland route

Itinerary

Arrive in Seiyun as a group and transfer to hotel for briefing.

Depending on the flight time, you will explore the city of Seiyun.

Overnight in Seiyun.

Today we drive to visit the tomb of Hud, the most famous Sufi saint of Yemen and the ancient town of Tarim. Tarim is famous throughout the world as a centre of Islamic teaching and it’s monuments include the Al-Muhdhar Mosque and it’s 53 metre high minaret, one of the tallest mud built structures in the world.

We will also stop for a visit at the tomb of Qabr Ahmad al Habashi before returning to Seiyun, and finally end the day watching the sunset overlooking Shibam.

Today we return to Shibam for a morning tour.
Known as the Manhatten of Arabia, Shibam’s mud-built skyscrapers are one of the highlights of any trip to the Middle East.
We will then leave the Wadi Hadramout and we enter the Wadi Dawan, a valley full of date palms and small villages.

Overnight in Wadi Dawan.

Full day to explore Wadi Dawan, starting with watching the sunrise over the wadi.

Highlights include the small village of Saif and the view of Al Hajjarain, built on a rock escarpment in the middle of a wide Wadi.
We will also visit Beit Buqshan, home of the famous coloured palace.

We continue our journey and drive to the old port city of Al Mukkalah.
Here we will take an afternoon tour, visiting the museum and the old port.

Today is a long but scenic drive along the Yemeni coast to the town of Al Ghayda.

We will start early and take our time stopping at small fishing villages and beaches along the way.

Continue the drive from the Yemeni border to Salalah (3 hours).

Information

The trip is based on staying in a three-star hotel or equivalent and on two guests sharing a room. Single supplement is an additional US$275.
There are many flights into Salalah from various parts of the world.
An E-visa is required in advance for entry to Oman.  We will obtain visa authorisation documents for guests ahead of travel so that they will be able to obtain visas on arrival at the Yemeni border.
Breakfast is included. Other meals to be paid for by guest.
An experienced English-speaking Yemeni guide will accompany you as well as an international guide from Untamed Borders.
Yemen is currently in a state of civil war. The majority of that fighting takes place in the west of the country and there is very limited conflict in the Hadramut region. Security conditions can change and we must state that the local team have the final word with regards to changes in the itinerary for safety reasons.
