In 2025 we are organising a trailblazing new trekking trip to the wadis and deserts of Eastern Yemen. The route will weave in and out of the date palm lined wadis, up steep canyons and across the harsh interior of the Hadramout region. It’s an adventure which follows in the footsteps of some of the world’s greatest explorers, such as Freya Stark and Wilfred Thesiger.

  • Trekking with camel support.
  • Camping in the Wadi’s and plateau under the Yemeni stars.
  • Supported by local Bedouin nomads
  • Visiting Shibam for sunset.

Itinerary

It is assumed guests will arrive on the flight from Cairo.
We will meet our local team and have a briefing about the trip. We will then drive to Shibam. Known as the Manhatten of Arabia, Shibam’s mud-built skyscrapers are one of the highlights of any trip to the Middle East. Best seen at sunset.
Overnight in Seiyun at hotel.

We will make any final arrangements needed in Seiyun then depart to the trailhead. From the Wadi Hadramout we enter the Wadi Dawan, a valley full of date palms and small villages.
Overnight at hotel in Wadi Dawan overlooking Haid Al Jazail.

Today our exploratory treks begins.
From the hotel we drop down into the wadi. Following the valley to the Village of Haid-Al-Jazil before climbing out of the wadi to the plateau to camp at an area called Baba-Ray-Bra, or Haid Al-Jazil Top.
Overnight camping.

From our camp we head due east and trek across the plateau and drop down into Wadi Agroon. In the Wadi we head north and find a suitable campsite.
Overnight camping.

Following Wadi Agroon north we arrive at the village of Mura which is also the junction with Wadi Mura. We turn right and head south down Wadi Mura. Camp in the Wadi.
Overnight camping.

We continue down Wadi Mura following the river. After about 3 hours we arrive at an place call Swari Hen where we climb out of the Wadi on the desert Plateau. From there we have a flat desert walk sometimes on a jeep track to our camp at Sharijs Hah.
Overnight camping.

A classic desert trek today. Crossing the plateau from one Wadi to another. It is easier walking on the jeep track rather than the on the wild desert terrain which is covered with rocks and rubble. Not dissimilar to the Empty Quarter desert which is not that far away. About an 18km walk. Camp on the plateau on the edge of Wadi Ein.
Overnight camping.

We have 2 nights at Wadi Ein. Today we scramble down into the Wadi and spend all day exploring this fascinating valley. We will climb back up to camp for our last night under the stars.
Overnight camping .

This day will be spent returning to Wadi Hadramout. If time permits we will visit a few mud brick built villages. This will include a view of Al Hajjarain, built on a rock escarpment in the middle of a wide Wadi.
Drive to Shibam for a final sunset. Continue on to Seiyun.
Overnight in Seiyun.

Transfer to airport for flight to Cairo.
End of trip.

Information

We do not and cannot offer a uniform accommodation standard on our itineraries. We consider comfort, location, design, character, historical interest and whether the money we spend will go into the pockets of the local community when we make our choices of where to stay. The trip is based on staying in a simple hotel or equivalent when in towns (twin sharing). When camping you will have a single tent.
Our trekking trips are designed to be physically engaging and do provide a level of challenge for most people. As a general guideline, we recommend that you have some prior experience walking up to 8 hours per day, over 5 or more days through uneven & varied terrain (and weather).
We do not directly arrange international flights to Yemen. There are flights from Cairo to Seiyun with Yemenia Airways.
We will obtain visa authorisation documents for guests ahead of travel so that they will be able to obtain visas on arrival.
Please ensure that you have appropriate insurance cover. If you have any questions about which insurance company to select, please contact us.
Breakfast is included in hotels. Other meals to be paid for by guest. All meals provided when on trek.
An experienced English-speaking Yemeni guide will accompany you as well as an international guide from Untamed Borders.
Yemen is currently in a state of civil war. The majority of that fighting takes place in the west of the country and there is very limited conflict in the Hadramut region. Security conditions can change, and we must state that the local team have the final word with regards to changes in the itinerary for safety reasons.
