Pioneering Ski Trips to Afghanistan

With lots of fresh powder and mountains that had never been skied before, Untamed Borders founder James Willcox saw a gap in the market for ski tours to Afghanistan, and in 2011 Untamed Borders became the first travel company to offer ski trips to the region.

Deep in the Hindu Kush, lies the small town of Bamiyan, the best place for skiing in Afghanistan due to its good security and incredible scenery in the Koh e Baba mountain range. Since 2011, Bamiyan has had a ski revolution and now has four ski clubs and multiple ski races, including the Afghan Ski Challenge, which Untamed Borders guests take part in each year.

On the snow, guests are guided by a qualified international ski guide in the mountains as well as the local Afghan ski guides, Ali Shah and Sajjad. Their story on trying to become Afghanistan’s first Winter Olympians has been documented in the recent film, Where the Light Shines.
