All about the South Sudan.

A 7-day immersion into South Sudanese culture, experiencing the country’s complex diversity first hand. While South Sudan is a beautiful country, the real highlight of this trip is not the scenery but the people. Starting in Juba, you will travel through the country to remote and isolated villages meeting some of the countries different tribes. Starting off in Toposa villages, best known for their piercings and scarification’s, to the foot of the Boya Mountains home of the Larim tribe, before passing through the Lotuko territory on the way to meet the Mundari tribe in their livestock camp.

If there is the opportunity you will also be able to watch the local sport of Boruboru, a version of dodge ball played by South Sudanese women and girls. A trip focused upon spending time with people from the world’s newest country. It is a unique opportunity to see this rarely visited country alongside experienced guides who know the tribes and their people personally.

  1. Day 1 Arrival in Juba

    Arrive in Juba, the capital of South Sudan.
    Transfer you to the hotel for briefing.

    Depending on arrival times there will be the opportunity to see some of Juba with the guides.

  2. Day 2 Juba - Kapoeta - Toposa Villages

    Early flight from Juba to Kapoeta.
    Registration with authorities.

    Drive to nearby Toposa villages. The villages are a maze of barns and huts. The Toposa are known for piercings and scarifications. It is a side of Africa that has almost disappeared but has been conserved in this remote country, isolated by the conflict and the lack of roads.

    Return to Kapoeta.

    Overnight in Kapoeta at a basic hotel.

  3. Day 3 Kapoeta - Boya Mountains

    Depart the Toposa area and head to the Boya Mountains.

    The Larim tribe, also known as the Boya tribe, live in villages at the foot of the hills. The Larim are magnificent architects and their houses are well built and attractively decorated. There shall be an opportunity to meet some of the village elders before climbing the main rock of the area in order to watch the sunset.

  4. Day 4 Boya - Lotuko Mountains

    Breakfast before departing from Larim land.

    We will continue to Lotuko territory, a Christianized tribe clinging to the feudal system. The Lotuko are divided into 4 kingdoms, with each one occupying a mountain. We will visit the kingdom of Ilieu. Walls are made of rocks, strategically positioned to adapt to the mountain geography.

  5. Day 5 Lotuko Mountains - Juba - Terekeka

    A long days drive returning to Juba then onto the Mundari tribal region. The majority will be on rough dirt roads but there will be a short section of South Sudan’s only paved highway.

  6. Day 6 Mundari Livestock Camp

    Breakfast and full day with the Mundari.

    The Mundari Livestock Camp is a Nilotic town dedicated to the raising of cattle. Both men and women mark their forehead with 6 marks in the shape of ’V’. The Mundari are constantly active with daily tasks and rituals almost all involving their cattle. From milking and polishing horns to collecting dung and urine. It is a hypnotic experience simply watching these activities.

  7. Day 7 Mundari - Juba - End

    Morning with Mundari (dependent upon flight time).
    Transfer to the airport.
    End of trip.

Accommodation

We do not and cannot offer a uniform accommodation standard on our itineraries. When we make are choices of where to stay, we consider comfort, location, design, character, historical interest, and whether the money we spend will go into the pockets of the local community.

The accommodation will be based on 2 people sharing.

An optional single supplement is available for an additional US$300.

We do not directly arrange international flights to South Sudan. However, we can suggest routes and operators.

You will require a South Sudan visa for this trip. We will provide visa support and advice on how best to obtain this visa.

We provide all meals outside of Juba.

When we choose our vehicles and drivers we take into consideration the road conditions, the length of journey and the competence of the man behind the wheel. Your comfort, enjoyment and safety of the journey is the top priority.

On this trip, you will be accompanied by an experienced English-speaking local guide.
