All about the Saudi Arabia.

An eight day introduction to the the history, culture and vast deserts of Saudi Arabia. On this 8-day trip we visit the capital Riyadh, the stunning Nabataean tombs of Madain Salah and the trading port city of Jeddah.

We will also try and get under the skin of the country a little by taking in a traditional desert camel race, exploring time in the gorgeous Wadi Dissah and exploring Saudis role in the Muslim world by spending time in Medina (Islam’s second holiest city).

A beautiful trip, which takes in remote landscapes, vibrant cities, historical gems and religious sites.

  1. Day 1 Riyadh

    Arrive in Riyadh. We suggest arriving before noon.
    Transfer to Hotel for briefing.

    In previous year’s we have visited the “Edge of the World” canyon however it is currently closed for safety reasons. Should it re-open we will visit.
    If not, instead, we will arrange a welcome dinner at a local house in the city.

    Overnight in Riyadh.

  2. Day 2 Riyadh - Tabuk

    Morning visit to Ad Diriyah village on the outskirts of Riyadh. The UNESCO world heritage site is where the history of Al Saud Dynasty began.

    This will be followed by Masmak fort, one of the most important monuments in the city of Riyadh. The fort was captured by the Saud family in 1902, the start of the Saud family rule of the region.

    We will have time to visit the Al Zal Souq.

  3. Day 3 Tabuk

    A day spent trying to get a feel of what it is like to live in the deserts of Saudi Arabia in the 21st century. The day will have a very early start and we will head out for 20km to a spot where camel racing festivals occur every other Friday throughout the winter. The camel racing is very traditional, the spectators following the race in their 4x4s through the desert is more modern.

    After the early morning races we will explore the Bajda mountains and Jubb canyon visiting a natural arch, 1300 year old rock inscriptions, sand dunes and some of the most diverse desert scenery in Saudi Arabia.

  4. Day 4 Tabuk – Wadi Dissah – Al Ula

    A day trip to visit the wonderful scenery of Wadi Dissah, one of Saudi Arabia’s less known highlights. The valley walls stretch up to 500 metres high and the bottom of the Wadi has patches of lush green fed by a river.

    Overnight in Al Ula at fully equipped camp.

  5. Day 5 Al Ula

    A day visiting some of the highlights of all of Saudi Arabia.

    This includes the archaeological site of Madain Saleh. After Petra, the grandest of all Nabatean archaeological sites.

    Also you will be shown the Hejaz railway and Dedan.

    Finally as the sun fades visit Elephant rock for photos.

    (note that the Maiden Salah tours are conducted by a third party government agency rather than our guides)

  6. Day 6 Al Ula - Medina

    A morning drive to Medina.

    Once in Medina we will be able to visit the museum, spend some time at mount Uhud, an important location in the foundation story of Islam. Finally we will visit the Qiba street which bisects the two most important locations of Medina in the Grand Mosque and the Qiba Mosque.

  7. Day 7 Medina - Jeddah

    Morning drive from Medina to Jeddah. Once in Jeddah visit the waterfront followed by a tour of the Al Balad district, the most traditional part of this old trading city and now a UNESCO site.

    End of trip. Transfer to airport for flight home

Accommodation

We do not and cannot offer a uniform accommodation standard on our itineraries. We consider comfort, location, design, character, historical interest and whether the money we spend will go into the pockets of the local community when we make our choices of where to stay.
The accommodation will be based on 2 people sharing.
An optional single supplement is available for US$600.

We do not directly arrange international flights to Saudi Arabia. We can suggest routes and operators.

We do not arrange Saudi Arabia visas directly. For most nationalities, there is a simple e-visa system.

Breakfast and bottled water is included. Other meals and drinks are not

When we choose our vehicles and drivers we take into consideration the road conditions, the length of journey and the competence of the man behind the wheel. Your comfort and enjoyment of the journey is the first priority.

On this trip you will be accompanied by a licenced English speaking local guide. This allows for greater security and means that there will always be someone on hand to help or assist you.
